LG Q3 2013 earnings - $2.78 billion in mobile revenues, 12 million phones shipped
Mobile device sales up 24 percent year-over-year
LG has just posted its third quarter 2013 financial results, encompassing earnings from its four major global divisions. As a complete company, LG posted $12.51 billion in revenues leading to $196.34 million in operating profit, which is up 27 percent year-over-year. We're most interested in the mobile side of things though, so let's get into the high points of LG's "Mobile Communications Company" for the quarter.
The mobile division posted revenues of $2.75 billion for Q3, which is up 24 percent year-over-year. Those solid revenues came from 12 million phones it shipped in the quarter, which nearly hits its record number of 12.1 million from Q2. LG claims that the average selling price of those handsets dipped due to competitive pressures, however.
Going forward it plans to focus on sales of its highest-end handsets like the LG G2 through the holidays, and simply letting sales of its lower-end 3G-only handsets sell to the masses. In all this is a solid quarter that continues along the same growth path from Q2.

Scientists Have Created a Disk That Can Store Data for a Million Years
Magnetic disk drive storage was born in the 1950s—thanks, IBM!—but while storage density and power efficiency have rocketed, the lifetime for which data can be stored has remained about the same, at around a decade. That could soon change.

BLACKSBURG, Va. (AP) — Anthony Boone ran for a touchdown, Ross Martin kicked two long field goals and Duke ended a long history of losing to ranked teams with a 13-10 victory against No. 16 Virginia Tech on Saturday.
The Blue Devils (6-2, 2-2 Atlantic Coast Conference) beat a ranked team for the first time since they stopped No. 13 Virginia in 1994, and beat one on the road for the first time since Stanford in 1971. And they did it without a third-down conversion all game, and a 2-to-1 time of possession deficit.
Virginia Tech (6-2, 3-1) had its six-game winning streak end as Logan Thomas threw four interceptions, the last on a deflected pass in the closing minutes that allowed Duke to finally run out the clock. The Hokies held the ball for 39:27 and outgained Duke 387-198, but still lost.

Lady Gaga Performs "Gypsy" in Berlin: Watch Here!
Giving fans a look at her new album, piece by piece, Lady Gaga performed "Gypsy" at an ARTPOP listening party in Berlin, Germany on Thursday (October 24).
The mustachio'd songstress wore a black brassiere and matching hotpants as she sat at the piano to debut her new tune.
After sitting, the 27-year-old pop star explained, "So I wrote this song when I was traveling around the world. They say that a gypsy doesn't have a home, but I do have a home. I have a home with you always."
Earlier this week, Gaga talked about the decision to share much of the album before its November 8th release, tweeting, "I composed ARTPOP to be a full experience, we are releasing all these songs and snippets to give you a more complete picture of the album." Check out "Gypsy" in the player below.
